Had my 30 week Ob appointmet today and I was asked if I wanted the Flu shot. I haven't had one in over 8 years because the last one I had made me sooo sick and I raerly get the Flu bug at all! My OB told me that I could get one on my next appointment if I changed my mind but left me feeling like I really should get one. Is one necessary even if I'm pregnant now when I haven't had one in over 8 years? Thanks!

You know I have not ever had one and my Ob told me at my last visit that she wanted me to get one. I just said I would look into it. Honestly, I am not going to get one because being I have not ever had the shot before and have heard you can get sick after it. I have been healthy so far with this pregnancy except one head cold. In my opinion, if you know it will make you sick..I would not get it. And as for me I do not get the flu. So why get the flu shot if you have not ever had the flu. So I decided not to. That is something that is totally up to you but they want Pregnant women to get the flu shot so they do not get sick. However if you are not the type to get sick all the time..why even bother with it. Thats how I feel.

I got the flu shot with both my pregnancies. I figured better safe then sorry. I worked in a doc office & my husband works in the fire/emt field so we are always exposed. Make it your choice not the doctors.

A flu shot does not give you the flu. It does however protect you and the baby (even after he's/she's born). My OB has the type without mercury so I don't have to be concerned with the potential exposure for my still growing little guy.

I just wanted to clarify that I did not mention anything in my post that the Flu shot gave me the FLU. I am aware that the shot does not give you the FLU but I do know that it can make some sick just caused by a reaction form getting the shot which is what happened to me the last time I had one done. I said it had made me sick some 8 years ago when I did receive one. I to at that time worked in the medical field so that is why I had one. Since then I have not had one and have not been sick either. So my question was just do I need one beased on being preggers?

No you do not need one based on being pregnant. Along with the pneumonia shot too.

Hopefully that answered your quesiton.

I chose not to get it, even though they were trying to pu****! I have never gotten one before and I had 2 other "flu season" babies. I do not believe that they can predict which strain of flu to protect you against. Just my own choice.

Thank You Lianne! (sp?)
I was going to say that but I couldnt find the words. My friend who is a pharmacist agrees with you and I on this one. Strains change ALL the time!

I'm another one who chose not to get the flu shot. I have NEVER taken a flu shot as long as it's been optional. Just a personal choice I've made. The last time I took the shot I had a severe reaction and was in the hospital for about 2 days with severe dehydration and other problems. I now would much rather take the chance of getting the virus versus taking the shot. Just my personal decision- and exactly what my OB told me- it's my choice. :)
